Music and Lyrics

Can I listen to music and write?  What song did I hear today?

Here is the kind of question I don't like to blog about because it is silly and doesn't require a long answer.  Yes I can listen to music and write. Most of the time I am watching TV and writing.

The only songs I hear now a days are songs from Babytv, CBBies and commercials (the Halifax ones are driving me crazy and I always get the Timmy Time song in my head).  The only time I listen to real music is when I am walking to work, and while I am at work.

I want to listen to more music at home because the Sprout has taken an interest in dancing and he dances to everything.  One reason I haven't been listening to music at home is because UK radio stations drive me mad (mostly because I hate this new pop and dance music).  They don't have stations dedicated to one kind of music (except classical), so you have to listen to ALL music over and over again.  The other reason is because I don't really consider my music to be appropriate for a little one.  I have a couple of things I don't mind trying out such as Jamiroquai, The Beatles and disco type music (I suppose some Scissor Sisters would be ok, as long as he doesn't listen to the lyrics) You know things that are light hearted and fun to dance to (totally opposite to the majority of music I listen to).

What kind of music do you think is appropriate for a toddler (please don't say nursery music because that is a given)?

I hope I am reading your post correctly. LISTEN TO WHAT EVER THE HELL YOU WANT!! It sort of sounds like you think the Sprout will turn into a Juggalo if he listens to anything but kiddie songs. Your mom and I put Sesame Street music on, of course, but mostly you and your brother listened to OUR music. CSN, The Eagles, Fogelburg, Grand Funk, Pablo Cruise, Billy Joel, Jethro Tull, Journey, Little River Band, Leo Sayer, just to name a VERY few off the top of my head. Do you remember any of it from then? Do you remember the lyrics? At two he will notice nothing...except the beat and the rhythm. The meanings of the lyrics will take him even longer to figure out, even after he can talk! I agree that you should monitor this as he grows, that's what parenting is about. When your sister K got into some questionable rap a couple of years ago I had to intervene. She said listen to this great song Dad. I could not understand most of the lyrics, but it was rap and I could tell there was explicit sexual content in it. I got them from on-line and sat down with her and had a talk. After seeing the lyrics and me explaining some of the phrases (in general), she admitted she did not know what the lyrics had said and just liked the beat. She agreed to stop listening. This is the only music sensoring I have ever done of any of my kids. From what I have witnessed as she has grown up more, I can say she did stop. Whether it is right or wrong, I (and your mom) allowed you to listen to pretty much whatever you wanted. I grew up turning off MY music (usually the Beatles or the Beach Boys!) everytime my parents walked into the house. I didn't know there was a new Nickleback album coming out until M mentioned it to me the other day. THAT'S the kind of relationship I want.
So, loosen your girdle, crank up Jamiroquai or whatever, grab your little guy and DANCE until he drops. Then, turn it down to moderate, and listen to YOUR music. ALL of it!
