We never got around to making the garden that we wanted. To do that would have taken money that we just don't have at the moment, but I went ahead and bought some flowers, potatoes and peas.
Unfortunately, because I didn't want to deal with snails and slugs, I went for plants that they don't particularly like such as begonias, and petunias. I do like these flowers, but I miss my pansies. I bought plants that hadn't flowered yet, so I am still waiting on them to be really pretty. I also planted random large sunflowers around the property. A few have been eaten by snails, but many are beginning to grow.
Because I have been trying to prevent snails from eating my plants, I have tried many different methods to see what actually works.
Cut aluminum cans around the plants-didn't work.
Coffee grounds-didn't work.
Crushed egg shells-seems to do a pretty good job. We'll see what happends when the berries come.
My neighbour said to put WD-40 on the outside of the pots, because they just slip off. I haven't tried it, but I am curious. I really need to get around to putting out beer traps.
I have been keeping most of the other pests (aphids, caterpillars and spit bugs) away by good 'ol finger power. Because we are outside most of the time, I tend to my plants allot to keep me busy while the Sprout does Sprout things.
Our front yard has been fun to watch because we didn't know what was planted there. There are allot of bulbs, so this spring has brought us many colourful surprises.
We have been very low on rain this spring and I feel bad when I have to water my plants with nice clean water. We have a butt outside, but we used most of it. I have started to fill it with the Sprout's bath water and my rinse water. Yorkshire Water was offering free water saving devises that I decided to get and try. The package came today. It had a 4 min timer for the shower, some kind of thing for the faucet and one for the shower, and a bag of something to put in the back of the toilet.
I might track our water for a week, if I can find our meter, and then use these things to see what happends. I tried the shower timer and to my suprise, I take 3 minute showers. I was done way before the timer.
