How many songs are in your repertoire?

I recently acquired the 500 best Classic Rock songs. There are 500 songs and I know (or at least know the chorus) of all but 2 songs. This got me thinking...how many songs do I actually know? There is 498 right off the bat. Now think of all the 60's-2009 Pop, R&B, Heavy Metal, Alternative, Hard Rock and Rap I know...All the lyrical Jazz, Big Band, Blues and Classical songs I know, not to mention all the children's songs I remember from school, and the few hymns and seasonal (like Christmas) songs I know. I know full albums and discographies, songs that will never be on the top 40 or even the radio. When you start to think of it, it gets overwhelming...I must know well over 500,000 songs. It really gets you to think of the human brain, and I think is even a testament to music and how it affects the memory. Not only can you recall lyrics, but rhythm, different musical elements and the correlation to personal memories....it truly is amazing.

For those of you who are interested, I included the list of songs below.

I wanted to add the pictures of my sweater and booties I made:

yes the sweater is black, brown and grey...get over it.

A way you can somehow quantify the number of songs you know...How many songs are on your iPod or MP3 Player?...at the moment mine has 825 songs, and I know all of them.

You really ARE on your way to being a Mom!..Knitting. A really fun perspective would be for you to take a picture of the footie in your hand. (I thought "bootie" sounded a little weird in that sentence! :) ) And, I will bet the bootie will be too big. It is amazing how small newborns are.

About the music. My God, I hope you didn't type that list out!! I got to thinking about what you said and it IS amazing how complex music is and that almost all songs, of whatever genra, are different. How is it that people are able to come up with so many differences in both melody and lyrics. I started collecting recorded music in 1961 and have never stopped. A fair amount of which I can at least hum knowingly to, if not sing with. Then I think of someone like Uncle Ron that did the same but also collects music from the 30's-50's. He sits up on a stage every Saturday night belting out these old cowboy songs AND people throw request at him from groups such as The Sons of the Pioneers, Bob Wills and, of course, Merle. Yup, the mind is amazing and so is music.

I often am amazed at how many songs i can remember also. all i need is the first few notes and i can sing the chorus. one of the things that baffles me though is when i think a certain song is by a certain artist, then ten years down the road find out i was wrong. for example, i thought the song "now your messin' with a son of a bitch" was an ACDC song up until a couple years ago, then found out it was by Nazareth.

it is crazy how a song can make you remember something or make you feel like you were in elementary school. i think its pretty cool when that happens.
