I have almost entirely given up on washable diapers. There, I have said it. I have many reasons and excuses, but the main points are:
- Seriously disgusting poo and the need to play with his personal toy
- Wiggly baby
- Never having found the right diaper
I originally started using the washable diapers as a challenge to save money and a little for the environment. After a 4 week trail, I was having no problem. However, as the Sprout got older, started eating real food, teething and being more mobile, the changing routine changed drastically, not to mention the amount of pain my lower back was giving me. As the Sprout began eating food, he began pooping, something he didn't do often when he was just breastfeeding (he had terrible tummy issues). Of course, this isn't a key reason to stop using washable diapers, for everyone poops and I actually like the idea of flushing it away rather than throwing it away. As he got teeth, the nature of the poo went from bad to worse, that coupled with a child who decided he didn't want to be changed and once the diaper came off immediately grabbed the toy God gave him made for a nightmarish changing situation for one person to deal with. Having to do this every 3-4 hours is an unnecessary ordeal, to say the least, on someone with chronic back pain. I was dreading the changing and we had quite a bit of leakage problems. Recently, the Sprout discovered how to undo his diapers and the washable ones I have a really easy to undo. I am going to have to start keeping him in a onsie so we don;t end up with poo all over the house.
Now I know these things sound like excuses: "Icky poo, having to wrestle a child and keep him from getting poo all over his hands and the house, boo hoo, it's a small price to pay for the environment and your wallet, right?" Not really. We have super diapers that come in the form of ASDA brand Little Angles Comfort Dry (a knock off of Pampers Baby Dry). As long as there is no poo, these babies last for 12 hours. We have been using them for night time since the beginning, I love them, they hardly ever leak. I can get 2 packs of 52 for £10. If we use 4 a day it costs a little more than £10 a month, which maybe the same amount as the water and electricity it takes to wash and dry the diapers.
I do believe where it all started to go downhill was because I never really found a diaper that fit my needs. I tried many kinds and it just seemed like I was spending more money trying to find the perfect diaper than reveling in the savings. If you do the math, I still haven't reached the savings part, I have possibly broken even. In the end, the pre-folds coupled with an outter was what I commonly used. But a wiggly baby was definitely the downfall of the whole project.
So I am coming clean and I just have to clear my conscience that I will be using disposable diapers more often than not. Sorry Ms. Molly.

Don't feel bad Jess. We are just back on the cloth diaper train after a month or so of mostly disposables. Charlotte's diapers were leaking too and figuring out the solution (washing with 1/4 c bleach and dawn + 2 hot only washes...) took a while. Bum Genius work best for me since I have a wiggle worm too. Thanks for getting me started...
