Wash the poo, don't throw it away

I thought today's blog topic was lame, so I am gonna write something else.

I originally thought I was going to use washable diapers...then I got lazy.  The Sprout was so small when I brought him home, the diapers would have eaten him alive and the thought of having to put them on seemed terribly stressful, especially since the disposable ones were hard enough.  Then I got really attached to my disposables.  I was shocked at how absorbent and thin they were, and you really only have to use 3-4 a day depending on how many times the baby poos.  We haven't had any problems with rashes or irritants.

But recently I have been wondering if I can be converted.  A couple of weeks ago I finally received my free starter pack from The Real Nappy Project (they were way late with this one and so most everything is too small.  I might have started this earlier if they would have delivered it to me in November), so this perked my interest.  I am doubtful, but now that the Sprout has more adult like poos, I think having washable didees will be easier.  Here are my worries:

Didee rash
Having to change him every time he pees.
Leaks
Reaction to laundry detergent
Cleaning the didees all together

I think I may give them a try starting next week after I have picked up the equipment.   I might just have a week trial, but I will have to insist on using disposables at night, I would not be able to sleep thinking that he is sleeping all wet.

I think I am going to go the way of the flat muslin cloth diaper and diaper wrap.  Not only does this seem to be the cheaper alternative, but the least bulky (For a week trial I only need 2-3 diaper wraps and 10 muslins...muslins are awesome for other things if this doesn't work out).  Have you seen those "grow with you" two part shaped diapers, they are too bulky for my liking and hugely expensive.  This will most likely cost me around £25 if I go the way of the shaped flat muslin and the budget wraps.  In one way this is an expensive trial because £25-30 is what it costs me a month to have disposable diapers, but that is a month vs. forever and I don't see a problem with donating the wraps.

Is there anyone else out there who wants to do the 1 week real didee challenge?
